The Things She Carried (with apologies to Tim O'Brien)

I am a little proud of the fact that I've managed to pack a whole suitcase full of gifts from Minnesota without buying anything connected to Garrison Keillor or the Mall of America.

Here's what I'm taking:

Lots of Minnesota postcards, including a whole bunch by a local graphic artist
5 wooden eagle feathers, carved by an artist at White Earth
3 dream catchers made by local Anishanaabe artists
4 children's books written and illustrated by Minnesota artists
4 1/2-pound bags of hand-harvested wild rice
A whole bunch of books: Mni Sota Makoce, What Does Justice Look Like? by Waziyatawin, Through Dakota Eyes, and a few other books on the history of the Dakota in Minnesota
About 25 copies of The Southerner, South's school newspaper
A whole bunch of South High pencils (thank you, you-know-who!)
44 wooden South High keychains, made by South engineering students in their fancy laser engraving machine (thanks Jesse Sirovy!)
1 kitschy MN license plate keychain with my host teacher's name on it.
